Trails of the Grizzlies - A Backcountry 4x4
Expedition
Over 100 years ago, the great grizzly bear roamed these mountains,
but in 1906, the last grizzly was killed. Today, their presence is limited
the the Big Bear Zoo. But their spirit lives on in these mountains.
Three Days, 125 mile in the Dirt, 15 trails in a Jeep Wrangler
Rubicon and a Nissan Xterra Off Road.
The San Bernardino National Forest provides over 900 miles of 4x4
trails for the backcountry adventurer. With scenery ranging from high
desert with chaparral, Joshua trees and yucca, to mountain alpine
settings, with evergreens and deciduous trees, the variety offers
everyone an amazing experience. Altitudes range from 1000 feet to
nearly 8000 foot elevation. Most of the trails are open all year,
offering beautiful wildflowers in the spring, warm summer drives,
changing colors of fall and the challenges of snow in the winter. Many
of the trails provide serious rock crawling challenges, but these
mountains offer spectacular backcountry drives for any 4x4 from
stock to radical, on trails ranging fro easy to most difficult. All of the
trails offer beautiful scenery and most provide spectacular vistas,
Some of these backcountry roads date back nearly 300 years, when
foot paths, horse trails and wagon roads were used for exploration,
logging and mining. Many active mines still dot the mountains, with
dozens of abandoned mines remaining from the gold rush era of the
1850's. Logging operations ceased decades ago, but many of the
trails were made for that activity. Wild life abounds in the mountains,
but sadly, the last grizzly was killed in 1906.
