Test for Backcountry 4x4s
The most intense 4x4 All Terrain Tire Test ever
conducted, the All Terrain Tire Shoutout Comparison
Test for Backcountry 4x4s included eight days of testing
with three brands of All Terrain Tires on the trails around
Big Bear Lake, Johnson Valley and Stoddard Valley. The
tires from BFG, Hankook and Toyo are all Load Rating E
(10 ply rating). We conducted over 20 tests in a wide
variety of tough terrain and trail conditions. We shot 50
hours of video and this DVD shows the high points, and
low points with 2 hours and 22 minutes of video,
including bonus features.
All terrain tires are used by a very large segment of the
SUV and 4x4 truck market. Of those who actually drive
off road, something over 95% of the driving is done
on-highway, so factors like handling, responsiveness,
wet and dry traction and noise are major onsiderations
for most users of all terrain tires. But just what is a good
all terrain tire capable of handling off road? The one
thing we know for certain is that anyone who uses a
daily driver for four wheeling off road has two concerns
-- therefore, two important needs. They don't want to get
lost and they don't want to get stuck. Flat tires and poor
traction are two ways to get stuck, so good all terrain tire
needs to have little chance of puncturing and good
traction, given reasonable weather and trail conditions.
