Considering the number of 12 volt powered accessories on a
typical 4x4, a good battery and charging system is a must. The
strain of operating an electric winch, on-board sir compressor,
auxiliary lighting, CB or ham radio, plus the normal items like
stereos, lights, cell phone chargers, and the starter will
eventually ring the death knell of any 12 volt battery, even the
best. The charging system also takes a beating, and if an
alternator goes south, battery discharge occurs quickly. For
decades, a well-equipped four wheeler carried a set of jumper
cables for emergency starting needs. The number of charging
systems and batteries damage by the jump start process would
likely support a small country for several months.
While it’s still good practice to carry jumper cables, there is a far
better method of jump starting an off road rig, and also have
additional 12 volt power for running and charging many other
items. Several years ago, the jumper battery pack came on the
scene. I’ve carried a simple jumper battery pack in my rig for
quite a while. But like most things electronic, improvements
come along faster the fuel prices rise.  And leading the
technology parade is Stanley Tools.
Nearly everyone has some type of a Stanley tool in the tool box
or kitchen utility drawer. In recent years, the Stanley Works has
expanded its line of tools and accessories, now including some
trick lighting and electronic gizmos. Enter the Stanley J5C09 500
Amp Jump Starter with Compressor. I’ve had a chance to try the
J5C09 for several months and have discovered some interesting
features. Of course it easily provides starting power for a dead
battery with 500 Amperes of instant starting power and 1000
peak amperes. I don’t know about you, but I occasionally
embarrass myself by forgetting to pack an important piece of
gear, or charge the jump starter before hitting the trails. Stanley
provides a trick way to look good when you do forget to charge
the jumper battery. It comes with a DC charging plug, a nifty
cable that plugs into the power port on the unit and the vehicle’
s power port, allowing the J5C09 to charge from the vehicle
charging system while you drive. (Normal charging is
accomplished with a 120 volt household extension cord plugged
into the male receptacle built into the back of the unit.) This can
accommodate multiple jump starts while on the trail, or recharge
the unit while driving for use in operating other 12 volt items
when camping or stopping for a meal.
But the real purpose of the Stanley Jump Starter is jump
starting. Even undertaking this obvious task brings some
interesting features. While you would expect heavy duty cables
and clamps (and it is equipped), the other features improve the
operation. Simply attach the clamps and if connected improperly
the alarm will sound, alerting you to switch the clamps before
turning on the unit. And if you find yourself in the dark, and
Murphy’s Law pretty much assures you will sooner or later, the
J5C09 is equipped with a 270° Pivoting high powered LED
emergency light. It makes hook-ups easy in the dark, and can
even be used as a work light in a pinch.
The Stanley Jump Starter is equipped with a 120 PSI compressor
with an easy to read backlit gauge. While not my first choice for
airing up a high-volume 35” mud terrain tire, it is perfectly
capable of getting the job done, just not as quickly as an on-
board air system. It can be used for airing up as an auxiliary
compressor. The compressor on the Stanley Jump Starter will fill
on 33” tire in about the time an on board air system fills three
tires. Not bad, and just fine for the occasional four wheeling
adventures or when friends without a compressor need some air
at the end of the trail.
This past winter, severe storms have caused several power
outages. Even with a low battery on my laptop, I was able to
keep it running for over an hour by using an inverter and the
Stanley Jump Starter. Even the auxiliary light came in handy. The
Stanley J5C09 500 Amp Jump Starter with Compressor offers
great utility and can save your bacon on the trail in a multitude
of ways. And the price is hard to beat at under $80. Check it out
at you local hardware store or online through many sources. The
