The purpose of a 4x4 is to create more torque and control
at low vehicle speeds. This is extremely important on hills.
Low range 4WD allows the engine to operate within the
peak torque range for climbing, and keeps engine revs
higher at lower speeds for safe, slow descents with
minimum braking.
High range 2wd on the transfer is used for normal highway
driving.
Low range 4wd on the transfer case is used for off road
driving where speeds are generally much lower.
Lower gear ratios multiply torque to the drive wheels,
allowing more acceleration which is needed on steep
climbs.
Four wheel drive allows all for wheels to be used to move
the vehicle, which increases total traction for acceleration.
Low range in first gear is the lowest gear ratio and is used
for the steepest climbs and also used on steep descents
where more engine braking keeps speed as low as
possible.
While backcountry trails can be driven in two wheel drive,
using low range 4x4 gives you more options for
maintaining speed and or accelerating quickly if
necessary. Keep in mind that the backcountry speed
range is from 2 MPH to 25 MPH. Rarely will speeds top
30 MPH.
